Former Bayern Munich coach and current Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovač has managed his fair share of games at the Allianz Arena — and, yes, Kovač knows just how good this version of Bayern Munich is and just how raucous the stadium will be for Der Klassiker on Saturday.
“We are a big club, that must be said. But Bayern are the record champions. They are by far the team with the most titles. They have really top-class, expensive players. We also have very good players. That’s why I do believe we
are a top team. But Bayern are on another level. The results also show that, and that must be said. We don’t want to talk up something that isn’t there. We are good, but Bayern are currently better. That is why Bayern are the top favorites,” Kovač told Bundesliga.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Kovač was told that Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany said Bayern’s recent awesome form does not matter in big games. Kovač respectfully disagrees.
“Yes, of course. Every game has its own story, and this is a very important match. I hope that everyone on both sides is fit, so that it can truly be a top game. A lot can happen in a match, and I absolutely agree with that. But you must not overlook the fact that Bayern are there for a reason. They are first in the Champions League, they are first in the Bundesliga. That means he is trying to downplay it a little. But I’ve been in the business too long to fall for that,” said Kovač.
After an eventful international break, Bayern Munich is back in action — and what better way to kick off this portion of the Bundesliga schedule than with Der Klassiker vs. Borussia Dortmund.
