After the Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed a change to the team’s offensive lineup: Mike Caliendo started left guard for the entire contest instead of Kingsley Suamataia. Reid said the details behind the decision would stay between him and Suamataia.
After the Week 5 bye, Reid spoke to local media via video call and updated them on Suamataia’s status, who had started every game at left guard since the start of the 2025 season, before the trip
to Las Vegas.
“Yeah, he’ll be back in,” Reid said to reporters.
Will Suamataia return to the lineup with a new teammate aside him? Second-year left tackle Josh Simmons (Back) has missed the entire season recovering from a bulging disc in his lower back. Ahead of Wednesday’s practice, Reid didn’t give much of an update on the preseason starter.
“Josh was here all week and doing his rehab and stuff, so we’ll see,” Reid shared. “They’ll be back in tomorrow and have a better idea of what’s going on.”
For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Nate Taylor shared that he would be surprised if Simmons practices this week when he appeared on “Cody & Gold” on 96.5 The Fan last Tuesday.
Rookie left tackle Kahlil Benson has filled in admirably so far this season, so there is a big question to answer once Simmons is healthy: does Benson go to the bench as a sixth-man backup for both the guard and tackle spots — or does he take right tackle Jaylon Moore’s place in the front five?
If Benson stays in the starting lineup on the right side, it keeps the interior depth where it is now; Moore practiced at guard during training camp but has exclusively played offensive tackle during his NFL career. If Benson goes to the bench, he could replace Suamataia the next time he mysteriously sits out an entire game.
The Chiefs do plenty of self-scouting during the bye week, and the left side of the line is certainly something the team should be thinking hard about as the season moves forward.
