Kawakami: 49ers can’t win Aiyuk Cold War if they never end it, the LeBron wait, and more
Was this the goal? The 49ers have held onto Aiyuk long enough not only for him to burn all bridges with them but inevitably to start nuking his relationship with Washington before even getting there.
If the 49ers release him now and Washington says no thanks to participating any further in the Aiyuk Experience, I’m sure Aiyuk will continue complaining. But he also might just disappear as an NFL figure altogether and assume the social-media status he’s been seeking all along: King of Trolls, Destroyer of His Own Career.
The main headlines can and will end once the 49ers release Aiyuk and release the rest of us from having to pay any more attention to this senseless story.
Andrew Whitworth questions 49ers’ confidence in drafting elite offensive lineman
“To me, it does scream that maybe they just don’t have a lot of confidence in their ability to select the right one, because this is the problem with offensive linemen: When you’re going to allocate a first-round pick or second-round pick to an offensive lineman, a lot of people love that theory, but you better be damn good at picking it,” Whitworth told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco at the American Century Championship on Wednesday.
“Because when you hit on an offensive lineman, it can be unbelievable for your franchise early in the draft because a great offensive line, a great D-line is the story to successful football teams. But when you miss on a high pick like that … you draft an unproductive lineman, you are cooked because now you’re getting a second, third, fourth-tier lineman who’s going to have to play.”
Mac Jones recalls ‘crazy journey’ to 49ers after being passed over during 2021 NFL Draft
“I remember, like, all the hype leading up to it, but yeah, I think everything happens for a reason,” Jones recalled. “I’m here where I’m at now, and I did think they traded up for somebody, and I knew it was one of two people, and I was one of the people. So, I guess if you’re a gambling man, it’s a 50-50 shot at the start.”
Kurtenbach: Five under-the-radar moves that could loom large for the 2026 49ers (Paywall)
These were super-under-the-radar moves. We’re talking undrafted free agents here, the ultimate NFL scratch-off tickets.
But I think the Niners found not one but two gems in that crop in Tennessee’s Bryson Eason and Illinois’ James Thompson.
Both looked like the real deal in the spring. I suspect that momentum will carry forward into training camp.
Eason is an explosive gap shooter who can hold his own on run plays. He was one of my favorite prospects to watch during the pre-draft process.
49ers minority owner among top 2 bidders to purchase NFC West rival
San Francisco 49ers minority investor Vinod Khosla is one of the two front-runners in the race to buy the Seattle Seahawks, according to Front Office Sports.
Khosla has been a name to watch from the start, but now it sounds as if he has a legitimate chance to become the next owner of one of the 49ers’ biggest rivals. The other top reported bidder is Celtics minority owner Aditya Mittal and former Celtics governor Wyc Grousbeck. Sources told Front Office Sports that at least one former Seahawks player is involved in one of the two groups, though that person’s identity and affiliation weren’t disclosed.

PFT shares the window when a potential 49ers’ QB Mac Jones trade would take place
“No real new information here, other than another talking head saying there’s a chance Jones will be traded due to the obvious. And it’s not as if Florio gave us a concentrated window. Nope. He said from the start of the season to the end of the trade deadline. Thanks for that.”
