They came close to a treble last season, but the only step forward for Bayern Munich this season from last season would be winning the Champions League. In one of the competitions most exciting two-legged ties, Bayern narrowly missed out on getting to the final in Budapest by losing to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals 6-5 on aggregate, with the first leg in Paris having finished 5-4 in favor of PSG. There were some questionable calls in the second leg at the Allianz Arena, but the football
on display from both sides over two legs fit the billing of what could’ve been the final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, but Bayern had to settle with the domestic double.
This time around, Vincent Kompany is hungry for the Champions League. Bayern set scoring records on their way to winning the Bundesliga last season as well as the DFB-Pokal, but the Belgian manager is far less concerned with records than he is with silverware.
Per information from Bild’s Julian Agardi and Michael Schröer (via @iMiaSanMia), Kompany had publicly reiterated to his squad during their preseason tour in Asia his bold desire and ambition to win this season’s Champions League. The Bundesliga and Pokal are still priorities, but he wants the European Cup.
This public affirmation to the squad during preseason went down particularly well in the eyes of Bayern’s hierarchy. The club’s front office, supervisory board, and executive board very much like the fact that Kompany had made his ambitions felt clear so early on, especially after the club had done well to get their transfer business done early in bringing in Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt and Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven. In addition to players, there’s also been more established consistency and continuity amongst the club’s front office with Max Eberl, Christoph Freund and Jan-Christian Dreesen all getting contract extensions after the recent supervisory board meeting took place. The harmonious balance at the club right now is something to be cherished.
In his third year as Bayern manager, winning the Champions League would be the icing on the cake for Kompany. Regardless, the club knows what they have with him – a manager who states his intentions clearly, is an excellent man manager, protects his players, and delivers with results on the pitch; a true embodiment of the Mia San Mia mindset.
