Joshua Kimmich has been out of action for Bayern Munich for the past week after the unfortunate passing of his father. Bayern’s number 6 missed out on the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena, the 3-1 Bundesliga win at SC Freiburg, and the 6-1 DFB-Pokal win over FC Magdeburg on Wednesday night. He last featured for Bayern in their 6-1 win over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and has taken time since then to be with his family and deal with the emotional strain of what happened
with Vincent Kompany in training at the end of last week.
Off the pitch, it’s been a difficult week or so for the German Rekordmeister, but it’s shown no negative effect to their performances on the pitch, and they’re riding a positive wave of momentum into this weekend’s der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund. For the first time in quite a while, Bayern and Dortmund will be locking horns in the Bundesliga level on points, and the top of the table is up for grabs—a win sees Dortmund leapfrog Bayern into first, but anything less keeps Bayern at the top.
Just two days ahead of the massive clash, Kimmich was spotted arriving at Säbener Straße (via @iMiaSanMia), and he took time with the fans to take pictures, sign autographs, and say hello. It’s been reported that the midfielder is expected to make a return to the squad this weekend against Dortmund, even with limited training under his belt ahead of it. The club had expressed their desire to let Kimmich take as much time off as he needed, but they’re also eager to have him back in the squad, especially since midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović has only just come back from a brief injury spell himself.
Kimmich would be a very much welcomed presence back in the squad if he’s 100% ready to go on Saturday, but it’s also completely understandable if he’s not quite yet emotionally ready.
