Yesterday. Mike McDaniel met with the media for his end-of-season press conference, and to say many came out of that with more questions than answers would be an understatement.
I listened to the full interview. And whether it was intended by McDaniel or not, it seemed as though he was going to have a significant say in who Miami’s next general manager was, or at least, that was the assumption by many.
This, as you may expect, brought mass hysteria to a Dolphins fanbase that is all too familiar with
this team taking half measures when ‘rebuilding’.
As someone without #sauces, all I could do was sit and ponder what may happen in my mind. Until the greatest Dolphins beat writer of all-time came through in the clutch, and gave the Dolphins fanbase a glimmer of hope that this time things may be different.
Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel will NOT be part of the GM interview process.
According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Mike McDaniel will not be part of the interview process. Instead, owner Stephen Ross, Tom Garfinkel, Dan Marino, Brandon Shore, Troy Aikman, and Danny Sillman, Ross’s son-in-law, will interview candidates via Zoom today and tomorrow before narrowing the search.
That does not mean McDaniel won’t offer his input on the team’s GM candidates, many of whom he has worked with in the past. But he will not be sitting in on the interview process, which was, honestly, the takeaway from many in the media yesterday afternoon, AND 100% how I translated it as I frantically typed with my three kids playing in the background.
That’s my bad.
Dolphins set to begin first wave of interviews for vacant GM position today and tomorrow.
Besides finding out the six members of Stephen Ross’ GM committee, we also learned that the team would begin interviewing candidates later today via Zoom. Miami plans to interview the following for their vacant GM position:
- Tariq Ahmad, San Francisco 49ers Vice President, Player Personnel
- RJ Gillen, San Francisco 49ers Assistant General Manager
- Alec Halaby, Philadelphia Eagles Assistant General Manager
- John McKay, Los Angeles Rams Assistant General Manager
- Jon-Eric Sullivan, Green Bay Packers Vice President of Player Personnel
- Josh Williams, San Francisco 49ers Director, Scouting and Football Operations
The Dolphins have set a GM tracker up on their official site. If you’d like to learn more about each candidate, click HERE.
My personal favorite from back when news first broke that the team parted ways with Chris Grier was Alec Halaby from Philadelphia. I live in Southeastern, PA, and have seen the juggernaut that they have built in Philadelphia. The only question, however, is how much say does Halaby have in Philadelphia? And is he ready to spread his wings and fly away from the safety of Howie Roseman?
No one can truly say for sure. However, regardless of who the next GM is, I hope the Dolphins get the best candidate for the job, not because of their previous relationship with McDaniel or what they’ve accomplished with their storied franchises, but because of what they’ll do in the future. Because I know I speak for everyone when I say, I’m tired of seeing the once winningest franchise in the NFL whither away into mediocrity.
What are your thoughts on the news that Mike McDaniel won’t be involved in the GM interview process? Do you think his job is safe or will it be up to the next GM to decide his fate? Which of these six candidates do you like most? Let us know in the comments section below!
