You’ve seen what a “super nervous” Tony Ferguson can do inside the boxing ring, now get ready to witness what happens when “El Cucuy” competes with “no pressure” in the “sweet science.”
Fresh off his knockout
victory over Salt Papi at Misfits 22 in late August, which awarded Ferguson the interim middleweight title, the former UFC lightweight and Ultimate Fighter (TUF) champ is already back inside the gym training for his December return against a Misfits opponent to be named.
The logical matchup would be a title unification bout against current middleweight champion, AnEsonGib.
“I’m not going to announce his opponent, but Tony will be [returning on Dec. 20] and will be unifying that belt, one way or another,” promoter Mams Taylor told Ariel Helwani. “Will be great to have him back. Honestly, I’ve gotten to know Tony really well — such a humble, cool guy and I’m excited that he’s fighting. His fan base initially hated us for putting him on against Salt Papi. I’ve been seeing him train. He’s going to do fine. Don’t worry about it. And he did. He did very well and I think he’ll continue to do very well.”
Taylor’s remarks suggest a deal may not be reached with AnEsonGib, who would likely be stripped.
The victory for Ferguson (1-0) marked his first as a professional boxer and snapped an eight-fight losing streak amassed under the UFC banner. In addition to the 41 year-old “El Cucuy,” controversial influencer Andrew Tate is also expected to compete in the Misfits 23 lineup in a heavyweight title fight opposite Chase DeMoor in Dubai.
