People always try to find comparisons and make connections.
That is especially true in the wide world of sports. And it’s even truer when you have Sean Payton.
As one of the best head coaches in the NFL and for one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, Payton brings a unique perspective. Payton will present Drew Brees for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame next week.
Of course, Payton was asked about his years coaching Brees with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday. It makes sense given
the success the two had and the relationship they built over their time together.
Regarding the Denver Broncos, Payton was asked about Brees and Bo Nix. Hence, the comparison and connection referenced earlier.
Payton said about Brees and Nix:
“I think that No. 1, they were high-volume college players. He (Brees) played a lot of snaps at Purdue. I would say the immediate, just analytical statistical number would be the accuracy numbers. From an NFL perspective, he’ll go down as the most accurate passer in the history of the league, and, collegiately, he was at Purdue. I think historically speaking, Bo was the most accurate college passer when you look at a lot of numbers, so that would be the first.
“(It’s) a tough comparison for anybody in their (third) year, but that would just be the beginning. Their personalities are different, of course, but their accuracy and their positioning of the ball is certainly noticed.”
Nix has a long way to go before he’s in the discussion with Brees.
However, Nix is on the right path after his first two seasons in the league. Coming off an ankle injury after one of the best wins in franchise history is an interesting element to the coming season.
We’ll see what the future holds, but it’s going to be fun to see Nix’s continued development and growth this season and going forward.
