Barcelona are interested and considering paying the release clause of 21-year-old Villarreal striker Etta Eyong, according to a new report from Diario SPORT.
Eyong’s release clause sits at €10 million, with half of it going to Eyong’s former club Cádiz and the other half going to Villarreal. Barça are one of many teams interested, with Real Betis, Real Sociedad and several Premier League clubs also watching his situation.
Barça’s plan, the report says, is to activate the release clause and immediately
send Eyong on loan to another La Liga team before the end of the transfer window, assuming full control of the player and watching his development either as a future member of the squad or as a potential high-profit sale in the coming years.
Eyong first caught the eye in preseason when he scored in a friendly against Arsenal at the Emirates, and he went on to start both of Villarreal’s first two league games, scoring in the opener against Real Oviedo and providing an assist in their rout of Girona at the weekend.
The Cameroonian is physically imposing, good in the air and a good passer, and has plenty of room for growth with his young age. Sporting director Deco sees his potential signing as a fantastic market opportunity, and Barça could decide to move quickly to fend off the interest of so many other teams.
As of now the Catalans are just interested, but this could gain steam quickly.
