Coach Kellie Harper made her first portal addition of the season in the form of guard McKenzie Mathurin. Originally from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Mathurin spent one year at Michigan before entering the transfer portal. She is currently listed at 5-foot-10 and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
She entered the portal with a “do not contact” tag. Her mother, Amber, is quite familiar with the industry as the owner of the Mathurin Sports Agency,
listed on her website as a dedicated Football Agent.
She averaged 3.5 points per game in just under nine minutes on great shooting splits of 46/39/84. Her best game at Michigan came against Penn State back in January, scoring 14 points behind three-made triples. The freshman showed flashes in year one, but struggled to find playing time behind Olivia Olson and Syla Swords, who were considered some of the top guards/wings both in the Big Ten and the nation. Despite less playing time, her work ethic never appeared to waver, and the Tigers are picking up a determined young player who will put in the work whether she’s on the bench on in the starting five.
Out of Broken Arrow High School, Mathurin, a McDonald’s All-American game nominee, was considered by 247 Sports the No. 35 overall player in the nation in the Class of 2025 and a f0ur-star prospect. She received a bevy of other power-program offers including NCAA Tournament teams such as Alabama and Nebraska, and had a final list of Baylor, North Carolina, NC State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Ole Miss. In fact, she received an offer from Mizzou back in the summer of 2024, but never seriously considered Columbia (until now).
Looking at the roster outlook for Mizzou heading into next season, this brings the Tigers down to four open roster spots moving forward. While Mathurin could absolutely has the talent to fill a potential starting role left by the departure of Dowell, her relative inexperience may move her to the bench depending on the rest of the transfer class. Buckle up, the portal madness is just beginning.
