Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has been named in Brazil’s 26-man squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, giving the Magpies a major international representative at the tournament as the South American nation aims for its sixth WC triumph.
The midfielder remains one of Newcastle’s most important players and continued to play a central role during a difficult club campaign.
Bruno’s return from injury late in the season gave Eddie Howe’s side more control in midfield and underlined how important
he remains to the team’s structure, with his return coinciding with the Magpies’ late-season improvement, even if too late to make an impact.
Brazil, meanwhile, enters the tourney under manager Carlo Ancelotti and will compete at the World Cup for a record-extending 23rd time. The five-time champions last won the tournament in 2002 and will again be among the most closely watched nations this summer, even if not considered to be among the tier-one favorites.
Before the tournament begins, Brazil are scheduled to play two friendlies. The Seleção will host Panama at the Maracanã, and Brazil will then face Egypt at FirstEnergy Stadium in Pennsylvania on Saturday, June 6.
Ancelotti’s side begin their Group C campaign against Morocco at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, June 13. Brazil then face Haiti at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, June 20.
Their final group match comes four days later against Scotland at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
