Newcastle United’s search for a new first-choice goalkeeper appears to be entering its final stages after weeks of evaluating alternatives.
Czech international Lukas Hornicek emerged as the leading candidate during the past few days, and Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder reported on Wednesday that Newcastle is already working to finalize a deal for the 24-year-old keeper.
“Newcastle United are working on a deal to complete a move for SC Braga star Lukas Hornicek as they look to bring their hunt for a new
No 1 to a swift close,” Ryder reported.
The goalie has been left out of Braga’s squad for Thursday’s UEFA Conference League qualifier as negotiations for his transfer continue, although Newcastle is not alone in his pursuit. According to Ryder, Portuguese giant Benfica is also interested, and the Magpies risk another whiff here.
“The 6ft 6in stopper has been pulled out of Braga’s squad to face Zeleznicar Pancevo in the Europa Conference League amid talks over his exit,” Ryder reported. “Hornicek is believed to be keen on the move to St James’ Park and could find himself positioned as number 1 for the new season.
“Hornicek has been linked with a move to Benfica, and it is clear he will be driving a market this summer.”
According to Ryder, Newcastle is remaining cautious despite the player’s desire to join after previous deals for Víctor Muñoz and Johan Manzambi collapsed late.
One thing that hasn’t happened yet, perhaps as Newcastle tries to lower the fee to pay Braga, is the execution of Hornicek’s release clause.
“Newcastle’s long-serving keeper Nick Pope was only named as a substitute for the clash against Bristol City – but Hornicek’s £29.5 million clause has not been activated just yet,” Ryder reported.
The Northern Echo echoed Ryder’s report, confirming Newcastle is in advanced talks with Braga but has yet to formally trigger the release clause, with both clubs instead expected to reach an agreement over a transfer fee.
After nearly two months — if not two years — looking for a new No. 1, it looks like the Magpies are finally edging closer to landing the goalkeeper they have wanted for some time, right before the start of the new season.
