The San Francisco Giants traded six players off of their Major League roster between Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres and Monday’s series opener against the Texas Rangers. And so, naturally, after parting ways with Luis Arráez, Heliot Ramos, Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, Erik Miller, and Caleb Kilian, the Giants had some work to do just to field a team tonight.
And so they added five players to the roster, all of whom were already on the 40-man roster, and have already played in the Majors
this year. Replacing the four pitchers are righties Blade Tidwell, Tristan Beck, and Carson Seymour, and lefty Reiver Sanmartin. Tidwell wil start Tuesday’s game. And replacing Arráez is infielder Buddy Kennedy, who was claimed off of waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
For those doing the math at home, that only gives the Giants 25 players on their 26-man roster. That’s not allowed under normal circumstances, but trades are exceptions to the rule. According to beat reporter Alex Pavlovic, the Giants are planning to add an outfielder tomorrow to replace Ramos. Their options there are limited, with Jonah Cox — who only just played his fourth rehab game yesterday — the only healthy player on the 40-man roster. But with four open spots on the 40-man — without even accounting for the three spots that will open up when the team transfers Casey Schmitt, Trevor McDonald, and Harrison Bader to the 60-Day IL — the Giants can afford to either make a waiver claim, or roster a player like Turner Hill or Parks Harber.
