The Falcons are in the midst of their final cuts ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Once the dust settles and the waivers have been sorted out—for more information about that process, we’ve got a primer here—Atlanta will be able to establish their 16-man practice squad. The deadline for teams to make waiver claims is Monday, August 31 at 1 PM ET. Shortly after, the claims will be announced, and teams can officially begin adding to their practice squad.
For those unaware, the NFL expanded practice squad
size and eliminated eligibility rules shortly after the COVID season. The practice squad is much larger now and can contain veterans, not just younger players and rookies. Depending on how final cuts shake out, the Falcons may have some very interesting decisions to make. I’d expect most of the squad to be made up of players cut from Atlanta’s own roster, but we always see at least a few outside additions every year.
A good practice squad can be integral to a team’s depth and success over the long NFL season. That’ll be critical to a Falcons team hoping to make the playoffs for the first time in more than eight seasons, where Atlanta is currently sitting at +240 odds per FanDuel.
