Jackson Suber posted a round of seven under (-7) to surge into the top 5 of the John Deere Classic on cut day and sits only four shots off the lead.
Suber shot the second lowest round of the day behind Eric Cole who notched a 63 (-8) in the second round. The 26-year-old out of Florida is overall -10 for the tournament behind the leader Lucas Glover, but he is looking for his first ever win on the PGA Tour.
It was an electric round for the former Ole Miss golfer as he birdied seven holes and scored
zero bogeys on the round. He has already finished in the top 10 twice this season and sits No. 85 in the FedEx Cup standings. The top 70 players qualify for the playoffs beginning in Memphis, Tenn. at the St. Jude Championship next month.
Suber’s best finish on the PGA Tour came last season when he was 117th in the FedEx Cup standings, so this season has been a marked improvement. In June, he was the 54-hole leader at the RBC Canadian Open though he was not able to capture the title.
Current odds to win are not necessarily what we would call a sure thing as it is +1100 for the young man to go home with the coveted golden tractor trophy (maybe real? definitely don’t google it). It is an encouraging sign of the times to have an Ole Miss golfer however competing at the top of the PGA leaderboard for the future prospects of the program.
The total purse for the John Deere Classic is $8.8 million with the winner receiving about $1.5 million. So far, Suber has netted about $1.1 million this year chasing tiny white balls around the world, so this could be another nice pay day for our former golfing son.
If you decide to watch the tournament, a potential win would mean Suber bolts into the top 40 of the FedEx standings giving himself a solid chance for the playoffs. You can watch via ESPN+ Saturday and Sunday morning, but coverage will begin on the Golf Channel at 12 p.m. CT then switch to CBS at 2 p.m. CT for the “Dad’s just resting his eyes” special afternoon viewing.
