After last week’s display of football, the Jacksonville Jaguars are back home to finish the preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Jags and Bucs have played each other eight times during the regular season, and the series is currently tied. Before kickoff on Friday, let’s take a trip down memory lane to revisit Jacksonville beating Tampa Bay at home through the decades.
The 1990’s
Week 11 on November 15, 1998
Final score: Buccaneers 24 – Jaguars 29
Attendance: 72,974
The Jaguars completed 18
first downs, recorded 374 total net yards, and a 31:11 time of possession, compared to the Buccaneers’ 13 first downs, 343 total net yards, and 28:49 time of possession. Fred Taylor scored all three touchdowns. Mark Brunell completed 22 out of 37 attempted passes for 248 yards and was sacked three times for a loss of 18 yards. Taylor led the team with 128 rushing yards, and Jimmy Smith led with 72 passing yards. Mike Hollis made the three attempted field goals. Aaron Beasley and Kevin Hardy had interceptions. Bryce Paup and Joel Smeenge recorded two sacks on Trent Dilfer for a loss of eight yards.
The 2000’s
Week 13 on November 30, 2003
Final score: Buccaneers 10 – Jaguars 17
Attendance: 60,543
During Jacksonville’s fourth win of the season, they had 21 first downs, 359 total net yards, and 31:30 time of possession, while Tampa Bay recorded 16 first downs, 221 total net yards, and 28:30 time of possession. Kyle Brady and Jimmy Smith scored touchdowns. Byron Leftwich completed 20 out of 34 attempted passes for 224 yards. Fred Taylor led the team with 118 rushing yards, and Jimmy Smith led with 136 yards. Seth Marler made one out of three attempted field goals. Mike Peterson had an interception. Marcus Stroud recorded two sacks on Brad Johnson for a loss of 12 yards.
The 2010’s
Week 14 on December 11, 2011
Final score: Buccaneers 14 – Jaguars 41
Attendance: 62,562
The Bucs’ 15 first downs, 280 total net yards, and 27:11 time of possession couldn’t compare to the Jags’ 21 first downs, 325 total net yards, and 32:49 time of possession. Colin Cloherty and Nate Collins each scored a touchdown, and Maurice Jones-Drew scored four. Blaine Gabbert completed 19 out of 33 attempted passes for 217 yards and was sacked once for a loss of eight yards. Jones-Drew led the team with 85 rushing yards, and Marcedes Lewis led with 77 receiving yards. Paul Posluszny, Ashton Youboty, and Kevin Rutland had interceptions. Tyson Alualu and Daryl Smith recorded three sacks on Josh Freeman for a loss of 14 yards.
The 2020’s
Hopefully 2027 is the year.
