Tensions are rising within the Pittsburgh Steelers family after former All-Pro center Maurkice Pouncey delivered a passionate public defense of longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in response to criticism from former linebacker Joey Porter.
Pouncey, who was recently inducted into the Steelers Hall of Honor alongside Roethlisberger, did not hold back when addressing what he described as internal criticism directed at his former teammate.
“It’s unbelievable the hate I’m seeing from people inside
the family,” Pouncey wrote on Instagram. “Especially when we all a call away. If you against Big Ben F—K YOU, YOU AGAINST ME! CLOUT IS A DISEASE.”
While Pouncey did not directly name Porter, the timing of his remarks strongly suggests they were aimed at the former Steelers linebacker’s recent comments on defensive captain Cam Heyward’s podcast, Not Just Football.
During his appearance, Porter was candid in his assessment of Roethlisberger, stating, “Won a Super Bowl with him, but the person? He’s just not a good teammate. Anybody in the Steelers locker room knows that.”
The remarks quickly gained traction across social media and within Steelers circles, sparking debate among former and current players. Quarterback Mason Rudolph appeared to side with Porter, replying “go off” and tagging him in response to a clip posted to the podcast’s Instagram account.
The public exchange has unexpectedly become one of the most talked-about storylines surrounding the organization, reviving discussions about Roethlisberger’s leadership style during his 18-year tenure in Pittsburgh.
Roethlisberger and Pouncey’s bond has long been well documented. Drafted four years apart, the two became cornerstones of the franchise and shared a close relationship throughout their careers. Their simultaneous induction into the Steelers Hall of Honor further symbolized the connection they forged as leaders of multiple playoff teams and two Super Bowl championships.
In a prior appearance on Heyward’s podcast in October, Pouncey spoke glowingly about Roethlisberger’s mentorship.
“You know, coming from totally different backgrounds, right? I think he took me under his wing,” Pouncey said. “He didn’t have to do that for me.”
For now, Roethlisberger has remained silent amid the renewed scrutiny. As speculation grows and opinions continue to surface, many within the Steelers community await what could be a highly anticipated response from the franchise’s former quarterback.
