Germany rose back to the top of the football world in 2024, when Julian Nagelsmann’s squad put in an inspiring tournament at the Euros on home soil. Despite an early exit, Germany was robbed by a bad referee decision, and lost marginally to eventual hosts. The tournament was a success but since then, things have not been all great.
Germany aimed to build on the tournament, and were doing well until failing to win the Nations League at home in Munich in 2025. Quickly after the tournament, a loss to Slovakia
didn’t help public favor and the view of the team was highly critical. Since then though, Germany have won 7 straight games and are building confidence quietly heading into the World Cup.
Despite the upwards trajectory, the confidence isn’t quite there for everyone. Rudi Völler was recently asked about Germany’s aspirations this summer and the legendary footballer and DFB boss was quick to rule out Germany as absolute favorites.
“We’re not among the absolute top favorites; there are three or four others. But I’m convinced it will be difficult to beat us. Of course, we want to win our group. And then we’ll see what happens. Naturally, we want to go as far as possible. But there’s no set target,” Völler told the media, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
Is he wrong? Perhaps not, but for the first time in a long time, it would be nice to see some confidence building around this team. With some other top national teams injured or out of form, it is not impossible for Germany to make a deep run if Die Mannschaft is able to get past Spain or France. With a tournament like this, anything is possible and if France or Spain were to exit early, the door would open up for the Germans to reclaim their throne on the world’s biggest stage. Will they need some luck? Absolutely.
