What is the story about?
Yes, that’s the story of the Hurricane
But it won’t be over ’til they clear his name
And give him back the time he’s done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he coulda been
The champion of the Dots
- Washington’s Men’s Rowing team brought a #1 ranking in the country into this weekend’s Windemere Cup. The national ranking, however, was not enough to make them favorites over Great Britain, who came into the race as defending Olympic Gold Medalists. The result was as close as you would expect when two #1 teams face off with one another. The Dawgs won the closest Windemere Cup race is the 40 year history of the event by .165 seconds. Congrats to the Husky rowers!
- Through spring practices, reporters covering the Huskies tend to rotate through position groups while players and coaches for those groups are available to the media. On the heels of UW’s spring game, Mike Vorel zoomed out to look at the team as a whole and opined that the team’s success will ultimately rest of the shoulders of Demond Williams. Unpopular as he is (deservedly), Williams showed the ability to take over games last season. If he can extend that ability to the top few teams on UW’s schedule, it could be the key that unlocks UW’s ascent to CFP contender status.
- Speaking of the spring scrimmage, Christian Caple summarized the key plot points from Friday night’s game. He emphasized that it is very much an entertainment-first event with players, cameos, and features that would never take place in a regular game. Nonetheless, it was clear from the scrimmage that Ryan Walters has something cooking defensively. The young DBs looked up to the task and the Huskies are stronger in the middle of the DL than they have been in years.
- The staff at Dawgman also wrapped up their spring coverage with awards for the full session of spring practices. Two of the most popular choices for players making big contributions were Drew Azzopardi and Jacob Manu. For a team that is fairly young overall, they are two returning vets who can anchor their respective units.
- It was a mixed bag for Husky Softball this weekend. Their late season swoon continued with a series-opening loss to Ohio St. They bounced back to win Saturday and then dropped the finale by a single run. They outscored the opposition 14-10 for the series, but ultimately dropping 2/3 is another sub-par showing. The Big 10 Tournament is up next, starting on Wednesday.
- Lastly, do you think it was a coincidence that Xe’Ree Alexander returned a kick after I wrote the following in the Special Teams preview? It sounded like the Big 10 Network crew were citing the post on the broadcast when they said ChatGPT said Xe’Ree Alexander would be the most likely returner, according to a post on a UW website. Sounds like Xe’Ree got the UWDP bump.
