What is the story about?

With Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund level on points heading into Saturday’s Der Klassiker, Max Eberl knows just how important the showdown could be in shaping the Bundesliga title race. The Bayern sporting director expressed his respect for Dortmund’s development under Niko Kovač but made no secret of his ambitions for the match.

“We’ve got a lot of respect for Dortmund. We won in Dortmund last season, even though it was close. They were in good form as well last season and have continued that

now. It’s Der Klassiker. They always challenge and push us. We want to win and create a lead over BVB. We’re currently equals in terms of the table,” said Eberl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Eberl was also asked about Aaron Danks stepping into the spotlight on the touchline amid the unexpected circumstances surrounding Vincent Kompany. He praised the collective effort of the coaching staff and emphasized the importance of pulling together during a difficult period.

“Things have happened that can’t be predicted. We have a coaching team that works together in an amazing way. We’re really grateful to have Aaron and the team. It’s not an easy situation. We’re working hard to come through all this as a group. That’s how things have to be in football,” Eberl noted.

Finally, Eberl addressed Joshua Kimmich’s personal situation following a family bereavement. While the midfielder has returned to individual training and could potentially feature against Dortmund, Eberl made it clear that Bayern will not put any pressure on him to return before he is ready.

“I’ve spoken with him. Life is different for him now. When something like that happens in the family, life changes for you. We’ll give him all the support he needs. If Jo feels ready to get back involved, whether that could be tomorrow or not, he’ll decide that with the coaching team. But we have to say that life is different for Jo now,” said Eberl.

A massive game awaits Bayern Munich, but Eberl’s comments also offered a reminder that there are things far more important than football. The club will give Kimmich all the time and support he needs.
