Love it or hate it, VAR is here to stay.
While traditionalists may bristle at the constant interruptions and the denials of goal celebrations by hair-width infractions determined by frame-by-frame analysis, the technology of video review has firmly embedded itself into the sport. And it is hard to argue with the notion of simply getting more calls right.
Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka weighed in in favor. With caveats.
“I’m in favor of VAR. I’m convinced it makes the sport fairer,” Goretzka
shared in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “If a crucial final is decided by an offside goal, for example, and you’re then robbed of your hard-earned win, that hurts. And I believe that VAR simply makes the sport fairer. Nevertheless, we all agree that it still needs some adjustments.”
Now, about that offside rule…and what exactly constitutes a penalty and what doesn’t. Even with VAR, a certain amount of controversy is here to stay, too.
