The LSU Tigers went on the road against Kentucky tonight, looking for a third straight win. LSU had the lead after the two-minute warning, but a late field goal and then a converted two-point conversion would be the difference in a 35-34 OT win for the Wildcats.
HOW WE GOT HERE
LSU started the game with the ball and went methodically down the field in 14 plays before Scott Starcyzk connected on a field goal to give the Tigers the early 3-0 lead. On the first Kentucky play, CJ Baxter took off for 767
yards down to the LSU 3. The Texas transfer punched it in a play later and took the 7-3 lead.
Later in the quarter, LSU went 75 yards in 11 plays and ended the drive with a double reverse 22-yard touchdown pass from Sam Leavitt to Zach Grace to make it 10-7. After a pair of quick three-and-outs, Kentucky got a punt-return touchdown to once again take the lead back from the Bayou Bengals.
LSU’s offense once again responded with a 75-yard scoring drive, this time going 14 plays before Leavitt found Jackson Harris in the back of the end zone for the score. Kentucky finished the half with a 15-play scoring drive that ended with Kenny Minchey punching it in to take the 21-17 advantage into the break.
The only points scored in the third quarter came via a Starcyzk field goal for LSU with 2:13 left in the frame to cut the Wildcat lead to 21-20 going into the fourth. Early in the fourth, Adam Zouagui made his first field goal of the night to increase the lead to 24-20.
Two minutes later, LSU ended a 75-yard drive with another trick-play touchdown as Harris found Roman Mothershed for a 41-yard score to take the 27-24 lead. Zouagui missed a pair of field goals late in the fourth and LSU looked like it would come away with a win, but a late punt and key drive from the Wildcats set up the tying field goal and sent this game into overtime.
On the second play of overtime, Leavitt ran it in from 15 yards out to take the 34-27 lead. Then, Kentucky found their way into the end zone and tried to go for two, but there was movement on the line that was saved by a Will Stein timeout. On the third attempt, Kenny Minchey ran it in from three yards out to win it 35-34 in overtime.
