Tampa Bay’s defense has been largely disappointing in recent seasons. The poor play can be chalked up to many different factors. One of the main culprits has been the team’s inability or down right refusal to address its once dominant defensive front— The losses of Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul sit at the head of that table, however, names like Ndamukong Suh have a seat as well.
For the first time since 2021, the Buccaneers have a defensive front that feels capable of being a (positive) focal
point for their team. The conversation goes beyond just the addition of Rueben Bain Jr., who by all accounts is preparing himself to make a push for defensive rookie of the year— The Bucs actually have depth. Tampa has players and then players backing up those players who, at least in theory, can be playmakers. The “star” segments of the group would obviously be the aforementioned Bain Jr., and returning starters Yaya Diaby, Calijah Kancey, and Vita Vea.
Diaby has taken some heat during his time in Tampa Bay but for most of his Tampa tenure he has played without a legitimate presence opposite him and he has still consistently produced— 19 sacks over three years, with only one campaign coming in under seven sacks.
On the interior, Calijah Kancey has every bit of ability to be an elite player. The issue is Kancey’s been as hurt as Taylor Swift after a break up. Not only has the former first-round pick never played a full season but his overall games played have dropped each year he’s been in the league (14, 12, 3). In those 29 career games, Kancey’s impressively netted 11.5. If Kancey’s on the field, he’s a problem for opposing quarterbacks. If…
Vita Vea. Little needs to be said about Vea. He is an elite player, one of the better Buccaneers in recent history, a potential Ring of Honor member, and another first-round pick on Tampa’s front. Vea may decide to not suit up this year amidst his contract dispute and that would leave a hole the team couldn’t mask, but we’re operating under the assumption that all players under contract will play.
Aside from Bain Jr., the actual momentous improvement is in the team’s depth. Recent years have featured Chris Braswell and Anthony Nelson dominating reps off the bench and each being just one injury away from being called into full-time action.
In the 2026 offseason, the Buccaneers flew into some turbulence, but they did focus their efforts on their defensive front.
Among the additions: Al-Quadin Muhammed— a true veteran edge-rusher— not a flashy free agent prize, just a solid NFL vet. Muhammed is coming off an 11 sack season and brings 26 career sacks to Tampa’s rotation.
On the interior of the line, the Bucs also added A’shawn Robinson. Similarly to Al-Quadin Muhammed, Robinson is not a flashy new piece. He is a reliable veteran player that Todd Bowles can depend on.
Through the draft, Jason Licht gave Todd Bowles the premium golden chess piece— Rueben Bain Jr., but Tampa also added DeMonte Capehart. Capehart and Robinson aren’t the only interior linemen newly sprinkled in the equation. The Buccaneers also returned Rakeem Nunez-Roches into the mix.
On the perimeter, the defense also has a quasi return in David Walker. Walker had AI levels of hype last season before suffering a season-ending injury and that hype has returned this season. In 2026, rather than Walker being in a situation where he has the upside to potentially push his way into a part-time starter’s role, he will definitively be a back up coming off the bench because the talent above him on the depth chart is cannot be unseated.
Honorable mention must be given to Elijah Roberts. Roberts snuck his way into action last season and while the year was a bad look for the team it wasn’t all that bad for Roberts. As a fifth-round pick, Roberts snagged himself two sacks and recovered a fumble. Looking to maintain that momentum, he kicked off his preseason against the New York Jets with a sack and two tackles. While he isn’t likely to be a repeat headliner, Elijah Roberts represents another depth player that could be featured in some highlight packages throughout season.
Pessimism around the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense is warranted after years of poor play, however, what was once a weakness, a void even, may have shifted to an arguable strength. For perspective, players like Chris Braswell and Anthony Nelson were near starters last year and while Nelson will certainly be a Buc in 2026 (Braswell may be) and each could see the field both are a heap of injuries away from starter-level reps.
