Bayern Munich stumbled to a 2-2 draw with rock-bottom Mainz in a match where the hosts failed to capitalize on their numerous chances. Vincent Kompany saw this unfold and admitted that his team fell short
of expectations.
“Mainz used their moments very well, and we made mistakes,” Kompany said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “We had our moments and created many big chances, which we didn’t take. I want to stay objective. If we didn’t create chances, that would’ve been bad. If we ‘gifted’ them many chances, that would’ve been bad. But that wasn’t the case. Nevertheless, we didn’t score enough goals and conceded two goals too many.”
The Belgian coach also summed up the day through a cheeky acknowledgment of the visitors: “Congratulations to the opponent, it was a great result for them. But honestly if you look back on the game and the chances we created, we’d score 3-4 more goals on another day.” It simply wasn’t Bayern’s day, but the number of chances that they created proved that they were active in this match.
