Somehow, every season, 160 baseball games aren’t quite enough. There’s always plenty of drama that spills over into games 161 and 162. 2026 is no different, with lots to be decided around the league during the last weekend of the season.
The Colorado Rockies have two more against the playoff-bound Chicago White Sox with a lot of divisional and Wild Card jockeying going on around the league.
The AL Central remains up for grab in a tight race. The Cleveland Guardians won 12-9 in extras last night, giving
them a one-game cushion over the White Sox for the division lead. The Guardians square off against the Kansas City Royals in a 5:10 p.m. MT matchup as well, so Southsiders will be scoreboard watching throughout the evening.
Chicago will try to hold their own and hope for an assist from KC. For their part of the equation, they’ll send out Davis Martin. Martin is 9-7 across 27 starts this season with a 3.84 ERA and a 1.294 WHIP. His production has declined as the season has gone on, as he’s 0-2 in his last seven games with a 4.76 ERA and 0-5 in the last 15 games with his ERA ballooning to 5.51 in that stretch. Despite starting the year with three wins in his first four starts, he hasn’t logged one since back in early June. He did, however, have a strong game in his last outing, going 4.1 scoreless innings, only giving up three hits with six strikeouts.
The Rockies couldn’t play spoiler against an Arizona Diamondbacks squad looking to be the third NL West team in the playoffs this year as they try to chase down the stumbling Philadelphia Phillies. Now, the Rockies try to log a rare September win and ruin some of Chicago’s fun. They’ll start Jose Quintana, who enters with a 2-3 record through 10 starts. The lefty carries a 5.40 ERA, a 1.511 WHIP, and 22/18 K/BB. After returning from a few months on the injured list with a sprained elbow, Quintana gave up three runs on five hits – including two home runs – in four innings of work for a no-decision in a 5-3 win for the Rockies.
The Rockies will see some old friends on the other side of the diamond, with both Brenton Doyle and Randal Grichuk in Chicago’s starting lineup (and with Drew Romo being recalled from Triple-A). The Rockies will look for more progress from their youngsters and try to reach some milestones across the rest of the batting order, including one more Hunter Goodman home run to reach 40 and two more triples to get Jake McCarthy to a 15-15-15 season.
The final days of regular season baseball are here. It will be an exciting finish around the league. Hopefully the Rockies have at least one more win left in the tank.
