The hype all offseason with the Broncos is how good it is that they are running it back. They have an unprecedented number of starters and contributing depth players back on the roster this season.
Hope springs eternal in the offseason and through training camp, but my eyes tell me there are areas of concern on this roster to look out for. Heck,I’ve posted about it earlier this year. Let’s revisit the areas of weakness on the roster and have a No Bull look at what the status is now.
Inside Linebackers
The major moves
this offseason to help bolster the inside linebacker position were drafting Red Murdock in the seventh round and signing undrafted free agent Taurean York. We’ve seen plenty of quality snaps and play from Murdock with a lot of praise from the coaching staff. York also has been talked up but may need another season before he’s going to be ready to be leaned on heavily.
I’m pretty bullish on Murdock. He’s a guy that can step in for Alex Singleton in a pinch—focusing mainly on 1st and 2nd downs. Even so, this position is still the main weakness on the defense, which we got a reminder about again last week with Singleton giving up an easy touchdown while vacating his area of the field.
There are at least a couple of young players getting coached up in and waiting in the wings, which is an improvement as far as roster management goes.
Wide Receivers
All we really have to say here is Jaylen Waddle. The cherry on top is the consistent news that Pat Bryant is absolute fire as well. The crazy thing to me is that a player like Troy Franklin got so many snaps last season and may have trouble consistently getting on the field of play. Cameron Ross is charging forward from the undrafted free agent class and making a name for himself.
The receiver position may have turned into a strength of the offense. I was pretty down on this position group back in March, but I think the offense has far greater worries at this point.
Tight Ends
The one area of concern I have on offense is the tight end position. Yes, the Broncos drafted Justin Joly in the fifth round as well as Dallen Bentley in the seventh. I like where both are at as rookies, but the offense is going to be leaning on Evan Engram and Adam Trautman as the season gets rolling. I do think the position improved, but like the ILB position, it lacks pizazz.
Running Backs
I was very pleased with the Broncos taking Jonah Coleman in the fourth round. Coleman looks superb and is a back that can step in this year and make a difference in the run game. The Broncos also resigned JK Dobbins, which I’m not overly fond of due to his injury history. Dobbins is a player that is easy to cheer for, though.
The guy I think is going to look really good this year is RJ Harvey. He was already looking the part of a red-zone playmaker last season. He’s the joker that the Sean Payton offense has been missing, and I think he will be the second most impactful weapon on this offense behind Jaylen Waddle. Overall, the Broncos’ running back room looks far better than it was last year.
Safety
Another big concern is the depth at the safety position. The Broncos tried to see if J.L. Skinner or Devon Key would be the answer to depth at safety, but it became apparent that they weren’t quite at the level that Vance Joseph was looking for. Taylor Rapp was signed recently to add veteran depth to the position. While I do think that does help a bit, Rapp is another player that needs to prove he is healthy and can stay that way after playing only six games last season.
Final Thoughts
