In 1988, Miami was still an independent, with Big East membership still three years away, and ACC membership 13 more off in the distance.
However, Miami had actually dropped basketball in 1971, not reactivating the program until 1985. Bill Foster, who had been at Clemson, was chosen to rebuild the program.
Duke and Miami played in 1988-89, which turned out to be Foster’s best year at Miami, with the Hurricanes finishing 19-12.
And that game in December of 1988 was special for a particular reason: it
was when Danny Ferry set the Duke and ACC record for the most points scored in a single game with 58. This broke the Duke record of 48 points, set in 1952 by Blue Devil legend Dick Groat.
And he was incredibly efficient, hitting 23-26 from the field and 10-12 from the free throw line. Ferry had 34 points at the half.
It was a stunning performance by Ferry, who is one of the smartest, craftiest, and finest players Duke has ever seen.
