After giving themselves a real chance as the month of September began, the Orioles promptly stumbled and mostly ended their hopes of getting anywhere good. When the dust finally settled at season’s end, they were five wins short of a wild card spot in the chaotic, weaker-than-usual middle of the American League.
There is no way to view the season other than as a disappointment. We already discussed last week about how the prime architect of that disappointment, and his chosen manager, appear to be
coming back even as their inability to do their jobs at the level required has been thoroughly demonstrated. In Mike Elias’s case, it’s two years of disappointment.
At least it’s finally over. There will be no more stupid 2026 Orioles games because there will be no more 2026 Orioles games. All of the ridiculous things that happened that led to losses are in the rear view mirror. Some of the players who figured prominently in those moments will not be seen in an Orioles uniform again. Others will be, and so we must hope that those guys manage to improve.
In this episode, I sing some more Pete Alonso praises, even if it’s ultimately a lament that more players were not as good as he is. Then, it’s a start to dig into where the real problems were with the team, in a big picture kind of way.
