The San Diego Padres were down a pitcher before Spring Training began with the news that Yu Darvish would miss the season after offseason elbow surgery. Joe Musgrove, who was returning from his own elbow surgery that caused him to miss the 2025 season, made one Spring Training start against Great Britain and has not been back on the mound in a game setting since. Finally, Nick Pivetta came into the season as the co-ace for the Padres along with Michael King and made a handful of starts before he was placed
on the injured list with his own arm troubles. San Diego president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller tried to address some of the pitching losses by adding Griffin Canning, who was not healthy to start the season, Walker Buehler and German Marquez, who also ended up on the injured list. Preller made one final addition by adding Lucas Giolito, who turned down a $19 million option with the Boston Red Sox to test free agency, and he went unsigned until agreeing to a deal with the Padres in mid-April. It seemed Giolito was just what San Diego needed but after three inconsistent starts he may not be with the team once Musgrove, Pivetta and/or Marquez return to the rotation.

- With names like Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts on the roster no one would expect Gavin Sheets to be the source of production for the Padres at the plate, but he has been just that through the first quarter of the season.
- Luis Arraez did not have the best time in San Diego. He was penciled into second position in the lineup more often than not and failed to produce as the consistent contact hitter he was known to be during his time in Minnesota and Miami. The Padres have shown themselves to be a team that lacks contact and Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune wonders if a reunion with Arraez might be in the team’s future.
- San Diego is looking to shake things up to get the lifeless offense going and the reported move that is the first sign of the Padres trying to make that happen is Jase Bowen being called up from Triple-A.
- While the big-league club has had its offensive struggles this season, the various levels of the Padres farm system seem to have offensive stars on every roster who continue to produce and make headlines.
