After an on-and-off week for the Brewers, they’re back in action following a scheduled off day yesterday and this evening, ready to begin a three-game series with the New York Yankees.
It’s been just a little over a year since the Yankees and Brewers last squared off, and last year’s series was certainly one that we’d all like to forget. Overshadowed by Torpedogate, it was the first time in over 50 years that Bob Uecker wasn’t in the booth; then, the Yankees turned their stadium into a whiffle ball
park, outscoring the Crew 36-14 and hitting 14 home runs in the first series of the 2025 season.
Tonight, things look a little bit different. The Brewers are getting healthier, as over the St. Louis series they added Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn back to the lineup, and their presence was quickly felt. Chourio went six-for-nine, with three of those hits coming as doubles. For Vaughn, it was a three-run home run early in game two against the Cardinals that lifted the Brewers to a series split.
If you like pitching, well, then this series will be for you. Tonight, it’s left-handed pitcher Max Fried getting the ball for the Yankees while Jacob Misiorowski makes his eighth start of the season.
All eyes will be on Misiorowski tonight, as exactly a week ago he left the game at the bottom of the sixth inning while in the midst of throwing a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals. Thankfully, it was just cramping for the young right-hander, allowing him to be green-lit for tonight’s opener. Through seven games this season, Miz has a 2.84 ERA in 38 innings pitched and ranks third in Major League Baseball in strikeouts.
Max Fried has had some ups-and-downs throughout the first month and a half of the season. He had a near-flawless month of March as he threw 13.1 innings of scoreless ball while striking out 10. Then, the first half of April wasn’t too kind to him as he gave up at least three runs in his first three starts. But after that shaky section of April, he was once again flawless to end the month. As the saying goes, history repeats itself, as in his first start of May he allowed three runs against the Baltimore Orioles. The big question is, can this rejuvenated lineup of Chourio and Vaughn, back in front of the home crowd, get to Fried early enough to score three runs to keep the trend going? I guess we’ll have to find out.
To tie both teams together, CC Sabathia is back in town to witness both of his former teams, as he gets inducted into the Brewers’ Wall of Honor after his historical second half in 2008.
With all the young stars taking the field tonight, the Yankees added one more as they call up their No. 6 prospect, Spencer Jones. The rookie outfielder replaces an injured Jasson Dominguez after he crashed into the left field wall during the top of the first inning against the Texas Rangers yesterday. Jones was batting .258 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs in his first month and a half with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Tonight’s game will be broadcast on Brewers.TV, WTMJ 620, and the Brewers Radio Network. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
