Liverpool’s September schedule officially received a League Cup addition this evening, with the Reds now knowing that they will host Championship side Southampton in the third round.
The draw followed the conclusion of the second round, which included Premier League clubs not participating in Europe—a group including Manchester United, who were defeated on penalties by League Two’s Grimsby Town to mark the biggest upset of the round.
Liverpool’s opponents Southampton beat Norwich City 3-0 to advance,
and will consider themselves unlucky to have drawn an away date against the Premier League defending champions as reward.
Southampton currently sit mid-table in the Championship with four points from their first three league games after being demoted last season after finishing 20th in the Premier League with just 12 points, one more than the historically bad Derby County side of 2007-08.
The third round of the League Cup is set to kick off the week of September 22nd, placing the tie between a home date against Everton and an away day at Crystal Palace for the Reds.
