The Jets made some headlines last week as they brought in free agent quarterback Russell Wilson for a free agent visit. Wilson told Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post that the Jets have made him a contract offer.
If Wilson signed with the Jets, he would serve as the backup for Geno Smith. It would be a reverse of the situation with the Seattle
Seahawks from 2019 through 2021 where Smith backed up Wilson.
It isn’t a guarantee that the Jets will sign Wilson, however. The ten-time Pro Bowl quarterback has also been contemplating ending his playing career and going into broadcasting. He was reportedly in discussions with CBS last week regarding a potential analyst role. Of course, broadcasting could be in his future even if he was to decide to play one more year.
The prospect of signing Russell Wilson is very unexciting for most Jets fans. While he was once a star, Wilson’s play has seen substantial decline in recent years as he has aged and lost his trademark mobility.
The Jets certainly would not expect big things. They simply would hope he could be a better QB2 option than Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe, or Cade Klubnik.
