It’s been raining nearly all morning and afternoon in Chicago, though it seems to be letting up a bit and they will likely do everything they can to play this game. Here’s the local radar for you to keep handy:
Saturday notes…
- UNDER THE LIGHTS: The Cubs are 38-26 in night games this season, but only 13-12 at home, including 5-5 in night games following day games. Last year, they were 21-11 overall under the lights at Wrigley Field and 12-4 following a day game. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- SATURDAY IN THE PARK: The Cubs are 10-7 this year on Saturdays, including 5-4 at home. They finished last season 20-7 overall and 9-5 at home. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- THE SECOND ACT: Since the start of 2025, the Cubs are 55-33 in second games of series, for a winning percentage of .625. They were 34-19 last year; this year, they are 21-14 and have won their last six and nine of 10. In all other games of series, their percentage is .541 (99-84). But this year the Cubs are just 9-8 in second games at home, including 3-5 after losing first games. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- TODAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Pete LaCock’s single in the 10th inning scored Bill Madlock with the winning run as the Cubs defeated the Cardinals 2-1 at Wrigley Field. It happened 50 years ago today, Sunday, Aug. 1, 1976.

David Peterson, LHP vs. Max Fried, LHP
Hey, it’s a New York reunion as former Met David Peterson faces Max Fried. In fact, these two met last year,
May 18, 2025 at Yankee Stadium. Peterson threw six innings and allowed three hits and two runs (one earned). We’d take that today, I am sure.
In three starts since that horrid outing against the Cardinals July 3, Peterson has a 1.56 ERA and 0.865 WHIP. He’s also started to look more like the ground-ball pitcher the Cubs thought they were getting — 24 ground ball outs out of 52 outs recorded in those three starts.
Current Yankees are batting .200 (13-for-65) against Peterson with one home run (Ryan McMahon) and 18 strikeouts.
Max Fried missed two months with a bone bruise in his elbow.
He’s made two starts since his return. The first, vs. the Pirates, was very good (one hit in five innings), but the White Sox hit him pretty hard on Monday (three innings, five hits, two walks, three runs). He threw 57 pitches in the first of those and 66 on Monday so I’d think he might still be pitch limited.
The Cubs hit him pretty well July 12, 2025 in Yankee Stadium — six hits, three walks and four runs (three earned) in three innings. Do that again today, Cubs.

The 2026 game discussion procedure has been changed, so please take note.
You’ll find the game preview, like this one, posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game.
The Live! (formerly “First Pitch”) thread will still post at five minutes to game time. It will also post to the front page. That will be the only live game discussion thread. After the game, the recap and Heroes and Goats will also live on the front page as separate posts.
You will also be able to find the preview, Live! thread, recap and Heroes and Goats in this section link. The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.
