New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: Ryan Yarbrough appears poised to return, perhaps as soon as when rosters expand next week. The veteran lefty was a boon to the Yankees’ pitching depth earlier this year, chipping in a 3.90 ERA in 55.1 innings as the club dealt with injuries. Yarbrough himself was felled by an oblique injury, but has been rehabbing with Triple-A Scranton and has allowed five earned runs over 12.1 innings. Though he’s worked as a starter while on rehab, he could serve as something
of a long-man/swingman, with the Yankee rotation currently full.
MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald: Jonathan Loáisiga has been down for some time with a flexor strain, and Aaron Boone confirmed yesterday that Loáisiga would miss the rest of the year. Though it was a tough blow for Loáisiga, it sounds like the righty will avoid surgery, which should hopefully mean he’ll be able to play next year. The Yankees have a $5 million club option on Loáisiga for the 2026 season.
FanGraphs | Dan Szymborski: Giancarlo Stanton has been positively incredible this season, coming off the IL and providing crucial production during a time when Aaron Judge has been banged up. Szymborski asks the question then: is Stanton truly Back? While he obviously can’t stay this hot forever, this run from Stanton has and should raise expectations for what he can do going forward. FanGraphs’ ZiPS projections are notably up from what they’ve previously predicted for the aging slugger, with the forecasts now pegging Stanton for robust batting lines in 2026 and 2027, and giving him an excellent chance at reaching 500 career homers before his contract with the Yankees is out. MLB’s active home run leader sits in 43rd place all-time with 446 homers.
CBS Sports | Matt Snyder: Though the Yankees’ dreadful midseason swoon saw them plummet out of first place in the AL East, the division race is far from over. They remain in striking distance of the Blue Jays and will face off with their division rivals next week in the Bronx. Although Toronto is definitely the favorite to take the division crown, the schedule works in the Yankees’ favor; the Jays have a relatively difficult stretch run, and the Red Sox have a middle-of-the-road schedule, while the Yankees have one of the easiest remaining slates among contenders.
New York Post | Dan Martin: Anthony Volpe’s horrendous slump has become one of the most prominent current storylines even as the Yankees have gotten hot, and the team’s veterans have been asked about how Volpe can go about getting himself out of this historic rut. “It’s about how you use it,” said Aaron Judge. “Are you gonna use it to crumble and in a negative way or just tell yourself you’ve got to play better? You have to use it as motivation.” Giancarlo Stanton, no stranger to deep slumps in New York, added “The most frustrating part of when I’ve gone through tough times is the mental part. You think about it from when you wake up to when you go to sleep. And that gets detrimental, too. You have to simplify everything.”
Volpe did get back in the hit column last night, notching his first multi-hit game since August 1st. So perhaps that will get him back into the swing of things.
