Another day, another late-inning lead lost by the Detroit Tigers, who saw the visiting Los Angeles Angels put up a five-spot in the eighth inning en route to a 10-6 defeat of the hometown crew. The Motor City Kitties scored six runs for the first time since a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on May 10, but Will Vest could not take advantage of the rare offensive output.
C’est la vie.
On Wednesday, AJ Hinch will send out the best healthy pitcher on the current staff, right-hander Casey Mize, looking
to prevent their team from sliding into last place in the major league standings. The 29-year-old has thrown two straight quality starts and has achieved that feat in four of his last five starts.
Mize faced the Angels twice last season, both efforts good enough for the Tigers to come away victorious. Hopefully, he can keep those trends of quality starts and winning on Wednesday.
For Los Angeles, fellow righty José Soriano will toe the rubber coming off a QS of his own in his previous start against the Athletics. He did not figure in the extra-inning win, but he played his part by holding his opponent to just two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings of work.
The last time Soriano took on the Tigers, he blanked them for six innings last year on May 2, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out five over six frames.
Here is how the two match up on Wednesday evening.
