Yes, you can actually believe that statement. The Phillies have finalists for three major awards.
The likelihood of any of the trio actually winning the award is pretty slim. Each of them have a player in their category that dominated that category in the season, although how a manager
can dominate is still befuddling to me.
Duran was one of the outstanding relievers this season. 33 saves, an ERA under two, a strikeout per nine rate over 12, the man just took down the competition during the regular season with stunning regularity. Luckily this voting was done before the postseason began.
Sanchez would maybe be the winner this year for the Cy Young award had he not been in the same season as The Miz. Sanchez’s scoreless inning streak is one of those things a pitcher can hang his hat on when contemplating the season as a whole, but he was excellent yet again. What a trade that has turned out to be.
Even with Mattingly, it’s hard to deny that the team was in the toilet when he took over following a 9-19 start. He led them to the playoffs where they put up a decent fight in the first two games before the team rolled over and showed their belly. He was rewarded with a contract extension.
