On Saturday Night Live, the current great spot, legendary really, is when the Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che write jokes for each other, which is genuinely brilliant because that allows each to write jokes for the other that they would never tell on their own.
It allows the audience to laugh at things that ordinarily would never even get aired. It’s amazing.
But the show has a long history of great skits, dating back to the very beginning, and one of the funniest ones was about basketball.
In this pre-taped bit, the late, great Connie Hawkins heard that singer/songwriter Paul Simon had a great playground rep, and he wanted to let him know that he was the best, and was going to prove it.
Hawkins was 6-8, and Simon was 5-3.
To make it even better, a young Marv Albert handled the interviews and play-by-play duties.
Of course, it was a joke. Hawkins was still an active NBA player, and Simon is 17 inches shorter. But it was a fun stunt, and you may be surprised to see that Simon actually had some game. And at the very end, he manages to turn the size issue completely upside down. Muggsy Bogues would have been proud.
