My grandfather is the one that got me into football. His favorite player was Romário, and he told me once that Romário played in Spain for this club called Barcelona. I was probably six years old. I didn’t
think much of it at the time.
Fast forward two years to June 2001 in a small town in Brazil, and I’m hanging out with my older brother at a sports bar where he liked to watch international football. It’s a random afternoon, and the TV is showing a game between Barcelona and Valencia.
“Oh, that’s the team my grandfather said Romário played for!”, I remember thinking. I then learn that Barcelona have a Brazilian player, an incredibly skilled left-footed attacking midfielder named Rivaldo. Rivaldo proceeds to score a hat-trick, including a legendary bicycle kick that will live forever, as Barça win 3-2 to seal a spot in the Champions League the following season.
I was hooked immediately. Barcelona became my team, and later became my job, and it has changed my life forever. There is nothing like Futbol Club Barcelona. There will never be anything like it.
