Hours before the ball dropped to ring in 2026, the Red Storm were busy putting it through the hoop.
St. John’s matched a Big East program record of 15 made three-pointers in their 95-83 victory over Georgetown on New Year’s Eve. All told, the Red Storm drilled 50% from the field and 55.6% from three on 27 attempts, their most efficient long-range shooting night when attempting 25 or more treys since beating Tulane in 2016.
The backcourt was largely responsible for the impromptu three-point contest.
Ian Jackson continued rounding into form, scoring 14 points and burying four triples for a second straight game. Oziyah Sellers also matched Jackson with a quartet of long-range bombs, recording 16 points and his sixth outing in double-figures of the season. Off the bench, Dylan Darling and Joson Sanon each scored in double-figures and recorded a hat trick of threes.
Georgetown pulled apart the St. John’s defense for most of the first half and held a seven-point lead at one point. The Hoyas scored 47 points before halftime and shot 48.5% overall and 45.5% from three (5-of-11), but the Red Storm tightened up, reclaimed the lead before halftime, and shut down the Hoyas coming out of the locker room. Excluding a flurry of buckets in garbage time, the Hoyas were held to 8-of-23 from the field and 2-of-8 from deep in the second half.
Zuby Ejiofor had his way with a shorthanded Hoyas frontcourt that also dealt with starting center Julius Halaifonua entering early foul trouble. Ejiofor led all Red Storm players with 25 points (7-of-9 FG, 10-of-13 FT), ten rebounds, seven assists, a pair of steals, and also joined the three-point parade with a made triple.
Bryce Hopkins was one of a few St. John’s players to not have a satisfactory scoring night with only eight points on 2-of-7 shooting, but he still impacted the game with ten rebounds, six assists, and two blocks, and led all players with a plus-minus of +21.
Three days after facing Ed Cooley’s current team, they will take on his former team, Providence. Tip-off on Saturday, January 3 from Madison Square Garden is scheduled at noon, and the game will be broadcast on FOX.
