The mood may be lousy at this point of 2026, or at the very least, the way things have been ending.
But they were much worse in 2023 when Nebraska hit the road for a Big Ten mandated Friday night match-up at Champaign, IL, in Matt Rhule’s inaugural season in Lincoln.
That year, Nebraska hit the road with a 2-3 record in a season which came out of the gate with a last-play FG 13-10 loss to Minnesota which was immediately followed by a 36-14 turnover-filled loss to Colorado. After winning their directional/Tech
games, they then took a Connor Stalion’s-aided 45-7 loss to Michigan.
The Illinois game quickly did a horrible job of restoring confidence.
After a touchback on the kickoff, the Illini drove straight down the field for a 1st and goal on the nine, and two quick gains found them inside the 1-yard-line on 3rd down. Luke Altmeyer no gain. Reggie Love III no gain. Nebraska took over 99 yards away. On 2nd down, Heinrich Haarberg hit Marcus Washington for 39 yards to spur an 86-yard drive which resulted in a FG for a 3-0 lead on their way to 17 straight points.
Trailing 20-7, Illinois would threaten one more time driving to the Husker 18, but the Blackshirts would again tighten stopping them on downs with 1:27 left. It would be the first of a 3-game win streak to take the Huskers to 5-3. And, yes, that would be followed by a 4-game losing streak to finish 2023 with all four being by one score, but how long is Illinois road magic supposed to last??
But the visiting teams have done very well in this series since Nebraska “jined up” with the Big 10, and if the Huskers use this as a “get right” game for 3-game run as in 2023, that will include a victory over Ohio State, and, my goodness, wouldn’t that be nice?
Yes, I’m digging with a steam-shovel big enough excavate canals, but sometimes history repeats itself.
So for all those watching, whether you’re hitting the road or tuning in, here’s what you need to know.
Go Big Red.

Next Tuesday’s show will be Season 3, Episode 10 and we will hopefully be celebrating a road victory after righting the ship against Illinois! (C’mon, football gods – give us a nudge.)
The watchers and listeners are encouraged to chime into the comments as they are happily a big part of the show. Pour your own cold one – or spiked coffee, we don’t judge – and hop aboards!

FACTS & FIGURES
- The 2026 meeting marks the third consecutive Nebraska-Illinois matchup played on a Friday night. Nebraska won at Illinois in 2023, while the Illini won an overtime game in Lincoln in 2024. The schools also met in a Friday night contest in 2017 in Champaign.
- The road team has won six of the past eight meetings, including three Husker wins at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium (2017, 2019, 2023). The 2017 and 2023 victories came in Friday night games.
- Tight end Luke Lindenmeyer has moved into the top five in career receptions among Husker tight ends. With his five catches against Washington, Lindenmeyer increased his career total to 61 catches. He is only six catches away from No. 2 on the list.
- Former TE Mike McNeill is the NU career leader at the position with 82. Not out of reach, but a tall order nevertheless.
- Defensive back Donovan Jones has a team-high seven tackles for loss, including a career-high 2.0 TFL against Washington. His seven TFLs rank fourth among FBS defensive backs.
- This marks the third consecutive season Nebraska has had three consecutive prime-time games in Big Ten play. Last year the Huskers hosted USC on Nov. 1, before road night games at UCLA and Penn State. In 2024, Nebraska hosted three straight September night games.
- Rhule won 19 games in his first three seasons, matching Nebraska’s win total for the five seasons prior to Rhule’s arrival. His 24 wins over three-plus seasons is one victory more than Nebraska won in six seasons combined between 2017 and 2022.
