The United States Men’s National Team continue to take a dip in the rankings. Last week, the FIFA world rankings were updated for September, and the USMNT fell one spot to 16th in the world.
The drop in
the rankings came after the USMNT lost to South Korea (remained at 23rd and beat Japan (who dropped 2 spots to 19th in friendlies during the September international window. The United States continue to be the second-highest ranked team in Concacaf, with archrivals Mexico falling a spot to 14th.
Spain is the new #1 in the world, moving up a place in the September rankings. They’re joined in the top 10 by France (+1 spot), Argentina (-2), England, Portugal (+1), Brazil (-1), the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia (+1), and Italy (+1). Within Concacaf, Canada moved up to 26th, while Panama rose to 29th in the world. Costa Rica, on the other hand, fell 7 spots to 47th in the world. The world rankings will help determine which pot qualified teams are placed in for the World Cup draw on December 5th, so teams will do what they can to move up in the rankings and potentially avoid some difficult matchups when the groups are formed.
USMNT have lined up some solid friendlies to close out 2025. In October, they will host friendlies against Ecuador (24th) and Australia (25th), and they will take on Paraguay (37th) and Uruguay (15th) in November. It has also been reported that U.S. Soccer is in talks with Portugal (5th) and Belgium (8th) to play friendlies in March, the last full window before the World Cup roster is named. The USMNT would love to reverse their trend and move up in the rankings by finishing out the year with some solid performances.
