The Seattle Seahawks offense was right on the doorstep of the end zone, ready to close out the game. Sam Darnold, the new Seahawks QB was going to be the hero in his first home game at Lumen Field.
Then, Abe Lucas got bull rushed by Nick Bosa just close enough to Darnold for his windup to hit Lucas right in the keester, causing a fumble which was recovered by San Francisco to seal a 17-13 loss.
Honestly, Seattle should’ve gotten run out of the building. The offense looked like garbage and couldn’t
stay on the field. The defense struggled on third downs, giving up a 50% conversion rate. San Francisco was also 2/2 on fourth down. Brock Purdy threw two terrible interceptions. The 49ers kicker, Jake Moody, looked like prime Blair Walsh doinking an easy field goal and having another blocked. Oh yeah, and George Kittle left the game early, while Jauan Jennings was injured late.
And the Seahawks STILL couldn’t win the game. It was a deeply disappointing showing all around.
Seahawks Droppings
- Nick Emmanwori injured his ankle very early in the game and wasn’t able to come back to play. He looked to be a big part of the defensive game plan, so I’m sure that his absence wasn’t helpful. Thankfully, the early prognosis is relatively positive.
- Riq Woolen was bad today. When he wasn’t being called for a penalty, he was misplaying the ball in the air. Ricky Pearsall got him on a double move to set up the game-winning TD for the 49ers. Speaking of that final TD, Riq was in position to end the game, but sat back and waited for the ball instead of breaking on it which allowed Jake Tonges to sneak in front and make the play.
- Since we’re on the subject of making plays, would someone on the offense please step up and make a play? Cooper Kupp dropped an easy first down. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the only person consistently producing today and even he lost a fumble and also had an opportunity down the sideline to make a circus catch, only to have the ball ripped out when he hit the ground. When the running game is ineffective like it is today, Klint Kubiak’s offense looks just as stale as Ryan Grubb’s from 2024.
- Where were the tight ends? They’re supposed to be a key cog in Kubiak’s scheme, but were barely used in the game. AJ Barner and Elijah Arroyo are good players, possibly the best receiving options after JSN. Get them the damn ball.
- Three of the four leading tacklers for the Seahawks today were members of the secondary. Julian Love, Coby Bryant, and Devon Witherspoon combined for 26 tackles. That’s not ideal. For all of the love that the defensive line has been getting, the lone sack today came on a blitz by Julian Love. That’s not gonna cut it.
- You want one positive from the game? Fine, Jay Harbaugh’s special teams units were the only part of the game that played well in my opinion. They blocked a field goal (Julian Love again), and weren’t a liability like they were at times last year covering kicks. Tory Horton was sure-handed as the punt returner and Cody White had a decent kick return. Much better than the Dee Williams debacle of 2024.
Had Seattle won, I wouldn’t have complained, but this was a game they deserved to lose. Darnold and the offense stunk, the defense bent just about as far as they could until Woolen broke. It’s only Week 1, so there’s plenty of time to get things moving in the right direction. Mike Macdonald has A LOT to fix this week.
