Despite Bayern Munich’s first slip-up of the season with their weekend loss to Augsburg in the Bundesliga over the weekend, the German Rekordmeister are still poised and ready to win more silverware this season. They still have a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund in the league table, are on to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and are in to the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal — a treble is well and truly still in the cards for Vincent Kompany’s side.
With the way things have gone so
far this season, there has been a fair amount of discussion about Bayern negatively impacting the overall attractiveness of the Bundesliga, especially for the outside viewers that don’t often watch the German top flight. However, hindsight is always 20/20 and there were even concerns with Bayern’s lack of transfer activity in the summer on the heels of their 2024/25 Bundesliga title. They missed out on getting Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen with his decision to join Liverpool instead after Bayern were fully expecting a mega transfer for the German playmaker. Optically, a club like Liverpool strengthening on paper after winning the Premier League made the perspective of Bayern being less active in the transfer window negative. From a punditry perspective, you can’t always have your cake and eat it too — Bayern shouldn’t feel guilty for how successful they’ve been this season.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen was recently asked about the Bundesliga title already being decided in Bayern’s favor with the level of dominance they’ve showed on an appearance on Bild am Sonntag. Ironically enough, this was not long after Bayern’s shock 2-1 loss to Augsburg at the Allianz Arena against a side that are only six points above the relegation zone.
“The season is still long. Of course I’m happy with this first half of the season, the likes of which we’ve never had before, especially regarding our attacking football, our goal scoring record, and our goal difference. Vincent Kompany has given the team back that hunger to keep pushing when we’re in the lead and to score even more goals – even though that didn’t work out against Augsburg today,” Dreesen explained (via @iMaSanMia).
In the Bundesliga, Bayern have scored an impressive 72 goals already while having only conceded 16. In the Champions League, they’ve tallied 20 goals and have conceded 7; the second-best defensive record behind Arsenal having only conceded twice, one of which was to Lennart Karl in their 3-1 win over Bayern. Looking back on some of the looming concerns that were evident when Bayern missed out on Wirtz in the summer transfer window, seeing where the club is currently at with having not had all of Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Hiroki Ito for most of the season is quite remarkable. Dreesen knows there’s something special brewing with the current squad.
“The team is having fun playing football, and that spark is contagious. If things stay like this until the end of the season, we’ll hopefully win a few titles,” Bayern’s CEO enthused. Everything is in their hands. They have a big lead in the Bundesliga, if they finish second in the Champions League table, then they’ll have home field advantage in the second leg ties in the knockout stages, and their only a few wins away from returning to a Pokal final appearance at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
