Atlético de Madrid won narrowly in its home finale for the 2025/26, as Ademola Lookman’s clipped finish midway through the first half sealed a nervy 1-0 win over Girona. The Catalan side ends the round in the relegation zone and must win next weekend to stay in LaLiga.
The game’s narrative was dominated by Griezmann, who assisted Lookman’s goal and played his final home match for the club. Griezmann is headed to Orlando City FC in the United States this summer.
Combined with Villarreal’s loss at Rayo
Vallecano, the result means Atlético are joint-third in LaLiga and need only a draw at La Cerámica next week to end the season on the league podium.
Here’s how each player performed in tonight’s match:
Starting XI
Oblak
Looked shaky on the ball early on but collected himself to make a staggering 11 saves in preservation of the victory. He made two brilliant stops on Viktor Tsygankov and one more late on against Azzedine Ounahi to break Girona hearts. A convincing display for the veteran goalkeeper. 9
Ruggeri
Bailed out early on when he was caught out of position, but Bryan Gil botched a header that should have ended in a goal. Struggled in duels but was able to get up the pitch and make a few nice deliveries toward targets in the penalty area. 5
Hancko
Made nine clearances and defended his box well amid waves of Girona pressure as the Catalan side threw everything they had at Atleti. Solid on the ball as well, misplacing just three of 47 passes. 6.5
Le Normand
Had considerable trouble containing Azzedine Ounahi, who brought mayhem through the middle with his dribbling ability. He played most of the match on a yellow card and ended it with eight clearances, as well as seven ground duels won. 4.5
Pubill
The switch out wide to Joel Roca seemed to be automatic for the visitors, causing problems for Pubill and company on the right. These lofted balls to resulted in a number of crosses into the final third and some close calls for Atleti’s defensive line. 4.5
Baena
Created four chances over his hour on the pitch, bringing energy and intensity across both flanks. His most recent appearances have been encouraging, and the spotlight will shine even brighter on him next season amid Griezmann’s departure. 6
Vargas
Impactful again, though he was dribbled past a few times as Girona turned up the pressure in the second half. He made three ball recoveries, won seven ground duels and completed 23 of 28 passes. The Mexico international continues to build a case for himself to stay in the first team next year. 7
Koke
Controlled the tempo in the first half and switched the play reliably in a no-nonsense outing. 5.5
Giuliano Simeone
A quiet showing for Giuliano on both ends of the ball. He only looked about half-fit before Cholo Simeone took him off after 45 minutes. 4
Lookman
Netted his fourth LaLiga goal since joining the club in January after beating Paulo Gazzaniga with a close-range finish from Griezmann’s cross. A full offseason program under Simeone and he could be a world-beater next year. 7
Griezmann
In his final home game for Los Colchoneros, Griezmann picked up his 100th assist for the club on his 500th appearance. The club’s postmatch ceremony honoring him was extremely well done. 8
Substitutes
Almada
The Argentine’s best moment came after he was able to break through Girona’s defense and send a ball to the oncoming Griezmann in the box to set up a half-chance. Created a couple chances in a solid display. 5.5
Morcillo
The 20-year-old was energetic and combative, if not a little over-eager. He picked up a yellow card in the 85th minute for a careless foul, but he continues to gain experience in LaLiga. 4.5
Sørloth
Subbed on for Álex Baena in the 61st minute. Decent linking up with his teammates but wasn’t able to challenge Gazzaniga. 4.5
Lenglet
Brought on for Lookman just after the hour. Made three clearances in a strong showing of box defending. No, I’m not kidding! 5
