For as much momentum as Will Stein and the coaching staff have at Kentucky, there are going to be players already committed to the program who decommit. That’s just the reality of coaching staff changes across college football.
Class of 2027 quarterback DJ Hunter has reopened his recruitment after originally committing to Kentucky in April of 2025. That was when he was still playing high school football in Knoxville, having since moved to Buford High School in the suburbs of Atlanta, and also while
Mark Stoops was still running things.
Hunter missed his 2025 season with an ACL injury, but he has still been visiting other schools in his recruitment.
“After consideration, my family and I felt it was in my best interest to go ahead and decommit and fully opening my recruitment back up,” Hunter told Rivals. “It’s been in the back of my mind ever since the head coaching change went down. After this weekend just felt like the right time to do it.”
The good news is Kentucky is heavily recruiting top 2027 quarterbacks Elijah Haven, Andre Adams, and Israel Abrams, all of whom plan on unofficially visiting in the spring. Abrams even scheduled an official visit for this summer to Kentucky. There is still plenty of optimism for Stein and the coaching staff to have a really strong quarterback in 2027.
Let’s hope the Cats can get a commitment from that group and have their blue-chip quarterback prospect as Will Stein looks to take Kentucky Football to new heights!
