The Brooklyn Nets are concentrated on the youth right now, and not just when it comes to roster construction.
Earlier this week, their new batch of rookies which we’ve donned the “Flatbush Five” attended the HSS Lerner Children’s Pavilion to visit patients and their families. C.J. Holmes of The New York Daily News was in attendance as well to document the trip.
“I think it’s special for all of us,” Danny Wolf told Holmes. “Just having the platform that we do and just being able to inspire kids through
good times and bad times, and I think it’s just something we need to utilize and embrace… This little interaction can go a long way for these kids, so it’s special.”
The rooks handed out merchandise, signed autographs, took pictures and more in what genuinely looked like a fun day across the bridge.
With HSS being partners with BSE Global, both the Nets and New York Liberty have made visits to the hospital before, though never with this many rookies. Brooklyn of course made history this summer adding five players via the draft in Drake Powell, Nolan Traoré, Ben Saraf, Egor Dëmin, and Wolf.
The latter two had fans inside and afar from the hospital on Thursday, as one mother visiting her son in the hospital called another at home, who specifically asked to speak with the eighth overall pick.
“The boy’s first request was Egor Demin, the Nets’ top pick in June,” Holmes wrote. “Then came a second name: Wolf. As soon as the phone was passed along, his voice burst with joy, and Wolf answered with the same unbridled spirit.”
Both Wolf and Dëmin expressed an interest to Holmes in getting closer to their new community. It’s something the Nets have prioritized as well. They’re meant to open their new youth center this fall, hosted a handful of camps over the summer, and are running back Practice in the Park back at Potomac Playground in a few days.
