Liverpool are a club on the precipice of crisis as October reaches its end, with the defending Premier League champions having now lost six of their last seven games in all competitions and with four straight
defeats in the league plummeting the Reds to seventh, level with Aston Villa.
Things have been especially difficult for superstar forward Mohamed Salah, the player struggling with being moved further from goal to allow more underlapping and box support from the fullback position. There have also been suggestions Salah continues to be heavily impacted by the passing of Diogo Jota.
It might be easy to imagine, with all of that as the background, that the player might be feeling physically and emotionally exhausted—and might be open to the idea of a change. And on that front, with Egypt’s Al-Ahly in the midst of their club elections, there are proposals to try to bring Salah home.
According to reports out of Egypt this week, vice-presidential candidate Yassin Mansour is leading the charge on that front, proposing that if he is elected he will lead negotiations to bring Salah back to Egypt. Others, though, are skeptical the suggestion is anything more than a political stunt.
“Linking Salah to Al-Ahly is only speculation and media talk,” noted current Al-Ahly deputy supervisor Sayed Abdel-Hafiz. “He is a player who has honored Egyptian football, a star who has done things that are difficult for any player in the Arab world to do, but he is still focused on his professional career.”
“Let’s be realistic, Salah only renewed his contract with Liverpool a few months ago, and no official at Al-Ahly has spoken about this matter as we are focused on the team’s actual priorities. I wish Salah the best of luck this year, but there are more realistic things that we must try in order to do well.”
Salah never played for Al-Ahly, beginning his career at the youth level with Ittihad Basyoun and Othmason Tanta before making the breakthrough at Al Mokawloon, where he played in the first team for two years before joining Basel. He did score his first senior goal while with Al Mokawloon against Al-Ahly.
