For the fifth consecutive offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be looking for a new quarterback.
Ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season, the Steelers have had a new Week 1 starter
every season since, and it appears that trend will continue.
While Aaron Rodgers may return in 2026, it doesn’t seem likely after the departure of Mike Tomlin, which will leave Pittsburgh on the hunt for a signal-caller this offseason. One NFL analyst suggests they bring back a familiar face.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggests that Pittsburgh reunite with Justin Fields.
“The Steelers don’t have a long-term answer at quarterback and could use a veteran starter if Aaron Rodgers isn’t willing to return,” Knox writes. “Fields wouldn’t be coming back to the exact same situation after Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach, but he would have some familiarity with the organization and the roster. And realistically, there might not be another franchise willing to give him a full season to audition as a starter.”
Fields went 4-2 as a starter with the Steelers in 2024, totaling 10 touchdowns (five passing, five rushing) and one interception. He then signed with the New York Jets, and his 2025 campaign was far less successful, as he totaled just 1,259 passing yards in nine games, going 2-7 as a starter.
