Another Mizzou Athletics sports season is upon us! While the last few years I’ve assigned this written piece to one of our talented photographers, I’m taking it over this year, and will be selecting my favorites of the week. Since I am not a photographer at heart, my analysis will be more surface level, but I’ll try my best!
This week, we saw the return of several sports teams at Mizzou, including women’s hoops and gymnastics. Not only that, but the SEC Cross Country Championships returned to Gans
Creek. Dan was on hand as part of his internship with Mizzou Athletics at SECs, and then also snapped some shots at Mizzou Gymnastics’ Halloween Hog Roast (they served pulled pork sandwiches to celebrate Mizzou Football’s matchup with the Arkansas Razorbacks), while Margo attended Mizzou Women’s Hoops exhibition game against fellow mid-Missouri team, Lincoln University.
Let’s get to it!
SEC Cross Country Championships
Missouri played host to the rest of the Southeastern Conference at Gans Creek at the SEC Cross Country Championships for the second time on Friday, earning a pair of fourth-place finishes and three individual All-SEC honors. Per the MU Tigers recap, both teams finished with their best result in several years (third place, 2019 for the women; third place, 2021 for the men).
“They’ve really come together in the last few weeks and I think for all of us, it’s exciting, but it’s a little bit of a deep breathe as well to know that, what we believe about ourselves, we can go back that up with performance,” head distance coach Kyle Levermore said.

Women’s Hoops Claims Mid-Mo Braggin Rights
Mizzou women’s basketball was dominant in its 117-43 exhibition win over Division II Lincoln University in Thursday’s exhibition opener. Per Jack’s takeaways, the young group showed real promise, shooting 59.3% from the field, outrebounding the Blue Tigers 59-34 and forcing 18 turnovers while committing only seven.
Gymnastics Spook-tacular
On Saturday, students (and me) were invited out to the Tiger Performance Center for the team’s open practice to get a first look at the new squad that Shannon Welker & Co. has put together. I came away impressed; this team is loaded with talent. We saw one vault (Kennedy Griffin’s stuck Yurchenko Full), a bunch of bars and floor routines, as well as a handful of beam routines. Dan took LOTS of photos at my request, and these are not even all of them.

I’ll be back next week with photos from Volleyween, the Missouri Duals, the women’s basketball opener vs. Howard, the men’s basketball opener vs. Cleveland State, men’s hoops vs. SLU in St. Louis, AND football vs. Texas. WOW… that’s a lot of photos.
