Boston Legacy announced the signing of Mexican defender, Nicki Hernández, to a two-year contract through the 2027 season.
“We’re really excited to welcome a player of (Hernández’) quality to Boston,” said Legacy general manager Domè Guasch. “She’s had a strong college career, has been a consistent presence in a very competitive Club América side, and is a regular with the Mexican national team, including at major tournaments. Nicki is a dynamic, hard-working defender who plays with real intensity
and brings qualities our fans will enjoy watching. She’s already performing at a high level, but she also has the ambition and drive to keep improving, which aligns well with what we’re building at Boston Legacy.”
The 26-year-old has played across the pitch as a forward and on the backline as a left back, but made a switch to left back in 2022 to get a better shot at a call-up to the Mexico national team and has stayed there ever since.
“One of my biggest dreams is being in the World Cup,” said Hernandez, “I knew coming here, I was going to be so much better individually, especially as a defender. This is probably my third year as a defender, because I would play other positions, so I know that Filipa (Patão) and all the staff here would get me better individually as a defender.”
Hernández spent her first four years as a professional with top Liga MX Femenil side, Club América. There she made 117 appearances won the 2023 Clausura championship against Pachuca.
With the Mexico Women’s National Team Hernández has appeared 27 times and has been a part of many meaningful matches for the Selección over the past few years. In 2023 she was a member of the starting XI in the gold medal-winning match of the Pan American games, and was part of Mexico’s impressive run in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup which included a 2-0 win against the USWNT in Los Angeles.
Hernández also played for five seasons in the NCAA until 2021 with Michigan. She holds both a United States and Mexico passport through her grandparents and will not take up an international roster spot as she grew up in Naperville, Illinois.
Boston Legacy’s roster is getting closer to being rounded out as they now have 19 announced players under contract for their inaugural 2026 season.
